Recovery after DHI: a month-by-month timeline

Understanding what happens to your hair after a transplant helps you stay calm and avoid panicking at exactly the moments when panic feels most natural.
Days 1–3: first sensations
Mild redness and some swelling in the forehead area are normal. You are given painkillers and antibiotics. The first wash, using a special technique, takes place on day 2 or 3.
Days 4–14: scab formation
Small scabs form around each graft in the implantation area. They fall off on their own by the end of the second week. Do not pick them off under any circumstances.
Weeks 3–6: shock loss
Most of the transplanted hair falls out — this is physiologically normal. The follicles remain alive and are resetting their growth cycle. Many patients find this period psychologically difficult, but it is unavoidable and temporary.
Months 3–4: growth begins
Fine, initially colorless hairs start to emerge from the follicles. This is the first visible sign that the grafts have taken successfully.
Months 5–8: active growth
The hair becomes more noticeable, darkens, and gains structure. This is when patients start to see a real result.
Months 9–12: the final picture takes shape
Around 80% of the end result is reached by month 9. Most patients take their "after" photos during this period.
Months 12–18: the full result
The hair reaches its full density and final appearance. The result lasts a lifetime.
